The beauty industry has always been fascinated by magic. Every year, a new breakthrough ingredient promises stronger hair, more shine, less breakage or faster growth. One year it's Argan Oil. The next it's Peptides. Then Hyaluronic Acid. Fermented botanicals. Plant stem cells. Exosomes. We're constantly searching for the ingredient that performs the magic. But what if we've been looking in the wrong place Because every exceptional hair care formula already contains something magical. Not because it transforms hair overnight. But because it allows every other ingredient to perform at its very best.

That ingredient is water.

It rarely appears on the front of the bottle. It almost never stars in advertisements. Yet it quietly represents between 70% and 90% of almost every shampoo, conditioner, mask and scalp treatment. Perhaps the real magic has been hiding inside the bottle all along.

 

So... Does water really matter in hair care?

The short answer is yes. Not because water magically repairs damaged hair. And not because one type of water alone can transform your hair. But because every modern hair care formula begins with water.

In cosmetic science, water is much more than an ingredient. It is what formulators call the vehicle or continuous phase of a formulation. In simple terms, it is the environment in which everything else happens.

Water is never just H₂O

At school, we learn that water is H₂O. Nature tells a much richer story. Every natural water carries the geological fingerprint of the landscape it has travelled through. As it slowly moves underground, it interacts with layers of rock, dissolving naturally occurring minerals and developing a unique mineral profile shaped by geology, time and nature itself.

Water has something remarkably similar to wine. It has a terroir. Some natural waters emerge very low in minerals. Others naturally contain calcium, magnesium and trace elements acquired during years—or sometimes decades—of underground filtration. 

Scientifically speaking, one natural water is not automatically "better" than another. Different waters simply have different characteristics. For cosmetic formulators, understanding those differences matters. Because when one ingredient represents almost the entire formula... Its story matters too.

 

Why cosmetic chemists care so much about water

Professional cosmetic laboratories almost always formulate with highly purified water. For good reason. Purification removes microorganisms and unwanted contaminants, helping ensure safety, consistency and long-term stability. It is one of the foundations of modern cosmetic science. But once water has been purified, another question remains. What kind of water do you want your formula to begin with?

Cosmetic chemists know that the aqueous phase is much more than a carrier. It influences stability. Texture. Sensory experience. Ingredient compatibility. Even the product's performance over time. Like the foundations beneath a beautiful building, it quietly supports everything above it. You rarely see it. But everything depends on it.

 

Why we chose the Dolomites

Once we started thinking differently about water, another question naturally followed. If every formula begins with water... Where should ours begin?

That question led us to one of Europe's most extraordinary mountain ranges. The Dolomites. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Dolomites are famous not only for their breathtaking landscapes, but also for their remarkable geology. Unlike many mountain ranges, they are largely composed of dolomite, an ancient carbonate rock naturally rich in calcium and magnesium.

For years—and sometimes decades—water slowly travels through these crystalline rock formations, undergoing an extraordinary natural filtration process before emerging with its own distinctive mineral composition. Long before it reaches a cosmetic laboratory... Nature has already been at work.

We found something profoundly reassuring in that. Nature had already spent years perfecting the foundation. We simply chose to begin there.


A different philosophy of formulation

People often ask us about our peptides. Or our botanical extracts. Or our nourishing oils. Very few people ask us about our water. Perhaps because it is the genie inside the bottle. Always present. Quietly working behind the scenes. Rarely noticed.

Yet it was one of the very first formulation decisions we made. Not because mountain water is a miracle ingredient. Not because geology alone creates beautiful hair. Beautiful hair is never the result of one ingredient. It is the result of thoughtful formulation. A carefully balanced combination of cosmetic science, ingredient selection and formulation expertise.

But we believe foundations deserve just as much attention as the ingredients they support. When one ingredient represents almost the entire formula... Choosing it should never be an afterthought.

 

Looking beyond the magic

The beauty industry will continue searching for the next breakthrough ingredient. And that's a wonderful thing. Innovation drives better products. Science continues to push formulation forward. But perhaps we've become so fascinated by the final 10% of a formula that we've forgotten to appreciate the first 90%.
